Re: Hive 06 [France, Brittany]

I added an insulating mat (Apifoam, 2cm thick, λ = 0.038 W/mK) under the metal roof.
I observed some forage activity at the hive entrance.

Re: Hive 01 [France, Brittany]

Comb collaps detected, collapsed combs have been removed (no dead bees).
Bees have started new combs: some worker brood, but mainly filled with nectar.

Re: Hive 01 [France, Brittany]

Vespa velutina and Vespa crabro still hunting next to the hive entrance.
I took a picture to illustrate how guard bees typically cluster around the hive entrance.
Entrance wide is reduced to various degrees or even blocked.

Vespa velutina is still there. I also observed repeatedly the European hornest (Vespa crabro, see photo). The video below was taken on 9 September 2018 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon of a sunny day. During about 20 minutes bees were flying around next to the hive. Before and after that, activity was ...

Four main questions to focus on

You are encouraged to note all kind of observations you could made. However, please report at least on these questions quarterly : (1) Survival - How long does a bee colony survive (nb of years) ? (2) Honey harvest - How much honey can be harvested on living/dead colonies (kg of honey per year)? (3)...

Re: Hive 01 [France, Brittany]

"Beeping sound" still audible at several occasions during last days, mostly associated with the presence of Vespa velutina near the hive's entrance. Hypothesis : worker piping (similar to ‘tooting, not ‘quacking’) as a signal of a disturbed bee colony. Guarding-worker piping (similar to queentooting...
