A digital precision thermometer with remote sensor (exo terra, model PT2472) has been installed.
Horizontal position : center of the brood chamber (10.5 cm x 15 cm, interieur measurement)
Vertical position : the tip of the remote sensor is placed 3.5 cm under the top of the hive.
The remote sensor is passed through a drill whole (5 mm in diameter).
Tape is used to make the cable fit tightly the whole.

Condensation inside the back and on the right (but not on the left, entrance side) of the hive.

I did a temperature survey during last hot week (up to 36 °C outside). If not otherwise stated, temperature readings are from the INTERIOR of the hive. Readings from outside (maximum temperature of a day) are from the nearest weather station.

Keep in mind that the hive is NOT exposed to blazing sun all the day. It is shaded in the morning, but gets more and more sun starting from 2 p.m. However, even in the afternoon the leaves of the treetop reduce radiation to some extent. The temperature sensor is placed 3.5 cm under the hive roof.

Daily cycles of temperature inside the hive (click to enlarge):
Observations:
  1. Outside temperatures of 34-36 °C regularly resulted in nearly 40 °C inside temperature.
  2. Bees started clustering around the hive entrance when the measured interior temperature exceeded 35 °C.
Bees clustering around the hive entrance:
- at different times of the day
- 3-day comparison of clustering at 6 pm

Miscellaneous video sequences (dancing bees, etc.)

I opened the hive today, the colonie is dead (by starvation ?).
Some comb had been collapsed and was partially replaced by new comb.
No more honey, pollen or brood.
Only few dead bees on the hive floor : rather small, with intact wings.

During last weeks I had measured the temperature inside and outside the hive.
Measurements were taken in the early morning (7-9 am) to avoid the impact of sunlight.
